In October 1977, Atari released the Atari VCS (Video Computer System) system in the United States with nine games. This system was later renamed the Atari 2600.
Atari sold well in 1979, and more games were released. Nolan Bushnell, the inventor of Pong and Atari's founder, left the company. In 1979, Atari continued this trend, releasing another 12 successful games. However, in 1979 and 1980, Atari faced competition from the Mattel Intellivision and the Magnavox Odyssey2 (Philips Videopac G7000).
Atari attempted to crush the competition in 1980 with a massive blow by releasing a home version of Space Invaders. The game was so popular that people bought Atari 2600s just to play it at home.
