The Xbox 360 is a video game console produced by Microsoft and developed by a partnership of IBM, ATI, Samsung, and SiS. The Xbox Live service allows players to compete online and download arcade games, trailers, TV shows, music videos, and rented movies. The Xbox 360 is the successor to the Xbox and competes with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii, both seventh-generation consoles. It is the first console to be launched simultaneously in all three major regions of the world (United States, Europe, and Japan) and to support wireless controllers from the outset.
The Xbox 360 was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12, 2005, with a detailed introduction and game information at E3. The device sold out instantly upon its launch (except in Japan) and, by December 2011, had sold 57 million units worldwide.
