The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), called the Super Famicom in Japan, is the second (not counting the Game Boys) in a successful series of consoles released by Nintendo. It was released in 1991. It was a 16-bit console. Notable were the controllers, which for the first time featured shoulder buttons. These are buttons on the top of the controller that you can operate with your index finger.
The Super Nintendo was Nintendo's second game console. The first console, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), wasn't a huge success everywhere. The Super Nintendo, however, became a success everywhere. Despite its late development compared to competing 16-bit consoles, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System became the best-selling game console of the 16-bit era.
