The arrival of the PlayStation 2 put games in a much broader perspective. The PlayStation 2 features better graphics, a faster engine and the ability to play Video DVDs, DVD-ROMs, Double-layered DVDs, CD-ROMs (PlayStation and PS One games) and Audio CDs. However, the discs on which PlayStation 2 games are released deviate from the standard. The PlayStation 2 can only read these types of discs, so you can't use pirated copies or homemade software.
The PlayStation 2 is also compatible with the old PlayStation / PS One Memory Cards (in combination with a PlayStation / PS One game) and the PlayStation / PS One controllers. By means of a PlayStation 2 ethernet modem (better known as a Network Adaptor) it is possible to play certain games online against many other PlayStation 2 users. The PlayStation 2 ethernet modem was released afterwards, and can be mounted in the expansion bay in the back of the PlayStation 2.
