The Nintendo 64 (abbreviation: N64) is the third in a successful series of video game consoles released by Nintendo. The Nintendo 64 was released in 1996 and was the successor to the successful Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Thanks to its original design and the new controller Nintendo introduced, the Nintendo 64 became a modest success, selling over 30 million units, despite competition from Sony's immensely popular PlayStation (released in Europe in 1995). The Nintendo 64 held its own and continued to release successful games. In 2001, the Nintendo 64's successor, the GameCube, was released, but the Nintendo 64 remained available until 2003.
Nintendo subsequently released many classics such as Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Donkey Kong 64, Super Smash Bros., and Mario Kart 64.
