The Sega Mega Drive is a 16-bit video game console first released in Japan in 1988. Despite disappointing sales in that country, the Mega Drive quickly became popular with avid gamers. In 1989 a release in the United States followed, where the name was replaced by Sega Genesis due to patent rights. In 1990 the Mega Drive finally came to Europe.
The Mega Drive was Sega's third consumer game console.
